Ricochet Fuel Distributors can deliver renewable diesel in bulk to your company, jobsite, or yard. We can deliver renewable diesel to your tank or ours! In addition to delivering to your tank, we offer tanks for rent, purchase, or free with monthly minimums.

Renewable diesel, also known as hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), is a biofuel made from various feedstocks such as used cooking oil, animal fats, and other waste oils. Unlike biodiesel, renewable diesel is chemically similar to petroleum diesel, making it a “drop-in” fuel that can directly replace conventional diesel in engines without modification. It meets the same ASTM D975 specification as conventional diesel, ensuring compatibility with existing diesel engines and infrastructure.

Compatibility

Renewable diesel can be used in all diesel engines, from trucks to power generators, without any modifications. Major engine manufacturers like Cummins have approved the use of 100% renewable diesel (R100) in several of their engine series, making the transition seamless for fleet operators.

Users and Applications

Renewable diesel is particularly popular among fleet operators, public transportation systems, and industries looking to reduce their carbon footprint. States like California are leading the demand due to stringent low-carbon fuel standards. Additionally, many oil refineries are converting their facilities to produce renewable diesel to meet both federal Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) and state-level low-carbon fuel requirements.

Benefits

Environmental Impact: Renewable diesel significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, with up to a 90% reduction in CO2 compared to traditional diesel. It also produces fewer particulates and NOx emissions, contributing to better air quality.

Performance: Renewable diesel has a higher cetane number (between 70 and 90) compared to conventional diesel (40-45), leading to more efficient combustion and improved engine performance. It also contains virtually no sulfur, reducing the risk of engine deposits and lowering maintenance costs.

Cold Weather Performance: Renewable diesel performs well in cold temperatures without requiring special additives, maintaining fluidity and reliability in various climates.

Challenges

Despite its advantages, renewable diesel faces challenges such as feedstock availability and market acceptance. The logistics of collecting and processing waste feedstocks are complex and dispersed, unlike the centralized production and distribution of petroleum-based fuels. Additionally, the expansion of renewable diesel production capacity is still catching up with the increasing demand.

Renewable diesel presents a viable and sustainable alternative to conventional diesel, offering substantial environmental benefits and compatibility with existing diesel infrastructure, making it an attractive option for industries aiming to reduce their carbon footprint and achieve sustainability goals.
