Renewable diesel, also known as hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), is a biofuel made from various feedstocks such as used cooking oil, animal fats, and other waste oils. Unlike biodiesel, renewable diesel is chemically similar to petroleum diesel, making it a “drop-in” fuel that can directly replace conventional diesel in engines without modification. It meets the same ASTM D975 specification as conventional diesel, ensuring compatibility with existing diesel engines and infrastructure.

Compatibility
Renewable diesel can be used in all diesel engines, from trucks to power generators, without any modifications. Major engine manufacturers like Cummins have approved the use of 100% renewable diesel (R100) in several of their engine series, making the transition seamless for fleet operators.

Renewable diesel is particularly popular among fleet operators, public transportation systems, and industries looking to reduce their carbon footprint. States like California are leading the demand due to stringent low-carbon fuel standards. Additionally, many oil refineries are converting their facilities to produce renewable diesel to meet both federal Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) and state-level low-carbon fuel requirements.

Challenges

Additionally, the expansion of renewable diesel production capacity is still catching up with the increasing demand.
